The Nile Basin Development Challenge (NBDC) ran from 2010-2013 and aimed to improve the resilience of rural livelihoods in the Ethiopian highlands through a landscape approach to rainwater management. The NBDC was implemented by a consortium led by the International Livestock Research Institute and the International Water Management Institute. It was funded by the CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF).
The NBDC is over – what happens now? We anticipate publications and other outputs stemming from the work will continue to be produced and be listed on this website. Some elements of the work will migrate into other CGIAR research programs:
- Water, Land and Ecosystems. The Nile Basin and East Africa is one of the focal regional areas where results and approaches from the NBDC will be taken forward: [[2]]
- Integrated Systems for the Humid Tropics. The East and Central African Highlands is one of four global action areas where NBDC work is likely to be taken forward. Parts of western Ethiopia form one of the program’s action sites: [[3]]

We are in the process of updating this wiki to reflect the fact that the Challenge is finished. However, much information here remains relevant and is helping other programs to build upon the insights and approaches honed in the NBDC.
